aA Brown is a typeface that draws it’s inspiration from the Alexandra and Ainsworth Estate in London, designed by Neave Brown in 1968. Brown used a strong brutalist style paired with a solid and angled concrete system throughout the project.

Using the features from the estate within the type, helps creates a truly connected and cohesive link between the two.

Most obvious link between the estate and the font would be the diagonal slants seen on the characters. This is drawn directly from the estate’s slanting structure mimicking the angle and relationship between the two buildings.

The floor plan helped create a grid which the type was designed within & the elevation plans of the building also developed how the text interacts between upper and lowercase.

To showcase the typeface and it’s condensed and extended variants, a type specimen booklet was created. Using the floor plan’s dimensions to shape the page and photographs of the estate to assist in the showcasing the links between type and subject.
